Fiona Kershaw / South West Sounds

Fiona Kershaw award winning songwriter, Australian Independent singer / guitarist, performer of alternative modern folk/rock/soul music, settled in South West Victoria in 2009. Raised in Central QLD in Rockhampton with her Brisbane born mother, Scottish born father and 2 older brothers, Fiona enjoys the climate change of all 4 seasons in the Warrnambool that south west Victoria offers, and the Variety of Music and Arts the area has, intrigued Fiona to start South West Sounds in 2016 on a Facebook Page, to share the events and news by talented musicians and artists, as a community page, and support one another.

Fiona began her own Music Journey at the young age of 13, with her first gig at a school talent contest, performing Pipeline surf instrumental and The House of The Rising Sun song, on her Electric guitar and a small Amp/combo microphone and guitar. Her first pub gig she was 14 playing country/rock lead guitar for her Fathers band, 'Appaloosa', in Rockhampton, followed by joining a 5 piece working/touring  Country/Rock/Blues band 'Horizon'
in the mid 90s.


Fiona began her own singer/songwriter/career, solo performing with Acoustic/electric guitars in 1997 when she moved to Brisbane city, to record her first EP 'Freedom' and she released it on cassettes for sale, with APRA copyright,  at her city Restaurant/Bar gigs she performed at for 2 years as a regular musician, every Friday, Saturday and Sunday Nights in Westend, Paddington, Milton, Fortitude Valley and the inner city. Fiona supported a few signed Artists in those days too, such as Penny Flanagan. Fiona was self-managed and Independent, and still is...

 Fiona won first place in The National Songwriting Competition in 2001 through The ASA (Australian Songwriters Association) for her song 'Infinite' in the Space Category, a trophy and $500 and this helped Fiona to be taken more seriously in the Industry to be accepted into music festivals. Fiona has performed at some amazing and beautiful locations since, Yungaburra Folk Festival in Far North QLD Hinterland, WinterMoon Festival in North Mackay Hinterland QLD, Village Arts on The Capricorn Coast QLD, Mission Beach Evolve Festival QLD, Denmark Easter Festival, South Western Australia, Upwelling Festival, South West VIC, Tarerer Festival South West VIC, St Bridgets Blues and Roots Festival , Crossley, South West VIC,  and recently at Port Fairy Folk Festival in South West  VIC.


Fiona has organised some of her own events since living in the Warrnambool area, a beyondblue fundraiser/ along with her Freedom Album 20th year anniversary with 9 bonus tracks never before released, with local support act musicians, Likely Celts, Gabby Steel, Bruce Campbell Collective, Jordon Hill, Bronson and Tina, and Fiona formed a Trio for the event with her son on bass, Shar Kershaw and local fiddle/lapsteel player Brett Holbrook, with Russ Goodear MC, Lighthouse Theatre Engineer Dave, and Lynny Mast at The Loft hosted the venue. Fiona organised a South West VIC mini tour for Neil Murray, Australian icon singer/songwriter/guitarist, 80s co-founder of Warumpi Band and My Island Home song writer, Christine Anu sang, and 10 album soloist, Fiona supported Neil on the tour in Warrnambool, Portland and Macarthur, along with local Artists Ishor Gurung and Jordon Hill. Fiona hopes to organise a South West Sounds Concert one-day soon in Warrnambool...
Fiona has released several albums, EPs and singles on Bandcamp, iTunes and Spotify, including, 'Freedom', 'Infinite'. 'Sweet Bliss', 'Good News' and her latest EP 'No More Broken Dreams' recorded in March 2018 with Pete Bird Sound Engineer in Warrnambool. Fiona is looking forward to recording more tracks at Pete's studio towards the end of the year to release an album in 2019...

Fiona's next gigs will be at Warrnambool Art gallery/ Aus Music Festival/ Bush Fire Relief Concert Fundraiser, Singer/songwriters showcase and CD sales on June 10th 2018 between 3-6pm $10.
AROCKALYPSE at The Lofts 7th Annual Festival , Fiona has a short set from 3.40-4pm also on June 10th in Warrnambool . Then on July 4th Fiona will perform for the first time in Melbourne city (a goal Fiona dreamed about in the era she sang in Brisbane) at The Drunken Poet, Fiona's set will begin at 8pm-8.50 songs from all her albums with CDs for sale.
