Kinnon
Kinnon is Emmeline McKinnon she is the second of six children who were raised in the rural area of Nirranda in the coastal area of south west Victoria. Her childhood experience was a very alternative experience but by no means one she wishes to repeat, with both her parents being creative people who in many ways displayed a good example of showing the importance of creative practice in daily life as a way of escapism, the exploration of self identity and just plain old fun. This example wasn't always a positive display of those things in practice but sometimes an example of the true cost to self of not pursuing them.
Kinnon always had a guitar but never the discipline to play properly or the wisdom to know how important it was. It wasn't until years later at the age of 37 she arrived at the deep realization that very little in life is under ones control, that there's always an imagining of yourself waiting to be pursued. It became apparent the importance of the pursuit of those things being what is it that one wants out of this life? That if you're sitting around waiting for permission from others to be yourself it's a sure recipe for unhappiness and worst of all bitterness.
So after investing in some guitar lessons with John Hudson, and the acceptance of learning with humility and a good sense of humour, Kinnon embarked on her pursuit of self and creativity, through learning the guitar and writing lyrics and music.
Writing music for Kinnon is often the deeply personal journey that is in many ways an exploration and sometimes an exorcism of the demons and less talked about experience of life. It is also a strange coming together of life long creative practice all mixed together with life and the desire to explore and understand its meaning and context within the acknowledgement of fleeting precious time.
Kinnon's taste in music is wide and varied but she tends to have very poor concentration when it comes to being a fan and will often listen to some albums once or twice will enjoy them love them but never want to hear them again. She is a fan of Lucinda Williams and Mick Flannery. She confesses that she's not even sure she'd listen to her own music!
Music for Kinnon is deeply personal. Her idea of achievement would firstly be to leave behind a body of work that her children can listen to and perhaps find an explanation of who she is or was. For her it would be a dream if she reached a level where she was asked to play from time to time at festivals and can in the future be good enough to back pack around the world and play in places making enough income to travel around those places she in in. However she has not given up her day job just yet...
At this time Kinnon has had opportunities to perform at The Loft in Warrnambool and some venues in Geelong in Victoria. Kinnon will use this winter as a time for further development and song writing with the outcome to be recording some of her songs.
